Impact of extreme heat on climate concern

New research by Ipsos shows that the recent extreme heat has increased the level of concern over climate change.
More specifically, it’s shifted people up from being ‘fairly concerned’ to ‘very concerned’, and from being ‘Not that concerned’ to ‘fairly concerned’. It’s not touched the ‘Not at all concerned’ group which remains a small but stubborn and significant minority. Overall though, three-quarters (74%) are fairly or very concerned about climate change.
What does change mean though?
Optimistically, It could be the jolt which forces politicians and brands to take ordinary voters’ / consumers’ concerns more seriously, and to listen to the ‘quite majority’ more than the loud naysayers. We’ll have to wait and see, but this wait may not be too long as we await the next announcement by Andy Burnham.
Realistically, what its unlikely to mean is major changes to individuals’ behaviour – the ‘intention-behaviour gap’ is just too big (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/tony-duckenfield_pebuk-peoplesemergencybriefing-climate-activity-7460280656883834880-Jg1p?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAAEjLEIB1e5oumvzClP0uo5HJMONEXj7JOY
However, those people with increased concern will be more receptive to messages relating to climate change and, for example, more interested in attending a #PeoplesEmergencyBriefing.
The window of opportunity may be short though!
